Coach with pynmo
An invitation to coach
Help engineers between roles find their footing again, and be paid for it.
Dear Colleague,
Thank you for considering coaching at pynmo.
It’s October 2026. Tech companies have laid off more than 130,000 people so far this year, already more than in all of 2025, according to Layoffs.fyi. AI is now the most common reason US employers give for job cuts, according to Challenger, Gray & Christmas, and AI-related cuts in the first five months of 2026 outnumbered those in 2024 and 2025 combined. Experts disagree on how far this will go. Either way, the count is still rising.
Set the numbers aside for a moment. Layoffs are reaching people at every level and with every kind of skill. At pynmo, our vision is to lead the conversation about tech layoffs and their real impact on people, and coaches are central to that. You see firsthand the talent that was let go. You shape how those people prepare, what they learn next, and how they present themselves to the companies hiring now. Each session is one part of that, and together they shape how this wave moves forward.
What you would do
- Identify skill gaps. Assess the technical and soft skills of each member you coach, to pinpoint specific areas to work on, rather than offering generic advice.
- Run mock interviews. Realistic interview simulations, with detailed feedback on performance, communication and self-presentation.
- Review résumés. Targeted feedback on a résumé, with an eye for what hiring managers look for. Résumés only: we do not ask coaches to review LinkedIn profiles or anyone’s wider online presence.
- Provide career guidance. Help the people you coach read the landscape: industry trends, role expectations at different levels, and the skills needed to move up.
- Refer someone, if you want to. Where you genuinely can and it feels right, a referral. That is the most we would ask, and it is always yours to decline.
- Support transitions. Guide pivots such as engineering management, QA into development or a cross-industry move, and what each really demands.
Who we are looking for
We are recruiting three kinds of coach:
Across all three, we look for:
- Three or more years of professional experience. In software engineering, engineering management, QA, product or a related field.
- Prior coaching or mentoring experience, formal or informal. You understand what it takes to develop someone over time.
- An eye for gaps, and the warmth to go with it. You can see quickly where someone stands and say so clearly. Honest about the gap and encouraging about the person: someone who has just been laid off needs both, and most of them need the encouragement more.
- Industry awareness. You keep current on hiring practices and technical trends in your domain.
- Strong interpersonal skills. You listen well, communicate clearly, and adapt to each person’s situation.
- Commitment to their growth. You are motivated by someone succeeding, not by checking a box.
Bonus qualifications
- Interviewing or hiring experience at a technology company.
- Having been coached or mentored well yourself, by people who shaped your career.
- Familiarity with the career challenges facing underrepresented groups in tech.
Compensation
Coaching sessions are paid. Coaches set their own price, and each fee is split between the coach and pynmo. We do it this way to encourage top quality coaches. Coaches and senior executives are both welcome to apply.
Timeline and logistics
